To be honest I wasn’t sure that this backpack was going to work. It is a bit big even fully reduced on the straps and my pup didn’t really seem to enjoy having it on as I tried getting her used to it on our daily walks leading up to our hiking trip. I checked out some other ones at various camping stores, and nothing seemed to be as good a quality as this one. So I stuck with it. From the moment I placed my pup on the ground at the trailhead of our first trail, she loved it! It was a completely different experience!!!! And there were many times on our 4 mountains in 4 days in the Adirondacks that we encountered muddy parts of the trail. The handle on the top of the backpack came in very handy for those parts. But it came in even more handy as I had to carry her down by the handle for large parts of a wet, muddy, slippery descent over rock at a 54-degree angle. I was worried that the straps across her belly might be hurting her but I didn’t find any bruises or marks or even tenderness afterward. I would love to see a patch of fabric on the underside webbing but that’s about the only complaint with this backpack. My pup meandered over and thru rocks on several instances, rubbing the sides of the packs on the rocks as she went and the pack tho a little dirty is none the worse for it!!! This little pack is worth every penny, and I won’t be going hiking anywhere without it!!! I love that it allows her to carry her own water and supplies though the balance act of the water does leave one side a bit lopsided til the other catches up as you break for water and pour it out of the water bottles in the pack. Overall money well spent.
