Google AdSense began using search history for contextual matching in February 2010 in an effort to provide more relevant adverts.[15] Google AdSense introduced Direct Campaigns on January 21, 2014, a technology that allows publishers to sell advertising directly to users. The last day to use this function was February 10, 2015.

Users with certain interests or settings might be the target audience for the content-based adverts. Targeting can be done using CPC (cost per click) or CPM (cost per thousand impressions). The main distinction between the two is that CPC targeting bases earnings on clicks, whereas CPM earnings are based on a larger scale, per thousand impressions.
